CLEF is multi-million pound UK-based research project that produces cutting edge results in information technology.  CLEF is developing technologies and IT applications that are of immediate use for healthcare service and medical research applications.  One of CLEF’s main aims is to provide develop, test and implement applications that provide easy access for both clinicians and researchers to patient information.

Sharing the wealth of knowledge that is gathered in clinical practice and in medical research, will provide a development in medicine that is only comparable to those antibiotics or radiological scanning.  Sharing of patient data however can only happen after the problem of ethical, secure and reliable anonymisation of patient data is resolved.

In discussions with specialists in the leading industrial partners, JEZZ Remedies clarified the market position for CLEF and prepared recommendations on how to communicate most effectively CLEF’s strategic aims and technological differentiators to industry partners.  CLEF’s commercial strategy is expected to help CLEF in the short to long term to:

CLEF partnerships

CLEF is seeking industrial partnerships to build long term strategic relationships for mutual benefit.  Hence it is essential that expectations both short- and long-term are well defined within CLEF itself, communicated clearly to industry and then these efforts are reciprocated by industrial partners.  Short-term goals must be set to serve the long-term goals and strategic management of the collaborations must become an integral part of project management.  One of the tasks for CLEF management is to regularly review the collaborations.

CLEF is a complex project that aims to progress in several interrelating technological areas and will deliver a comprehensive clinical data management system with its own access control, data mining and data management modules.  Industry based initiatives are seldom that complex (or ambitious) mainly for the one reason that commercial companies were forced to specialise in one or a few of these R&D areas.

There are 3 main industry groups from CLEF’s point of view:

o     Those who develop the new electronic care record system

o     Those who provide specialised applications for clinicians, pharmacists and researchers

o     Secondary users
